Are you the type of person who always NEEDS to be in control? The kind of person who if they aren’t, they feel like they are losing a piece of themselves? Don’t feel bad if this is you because my middle name used to be “control”. Being in control makes us feel safe. It makes us feel like we have power and authority. People who always need to be in control feel as if they are in control, things can’t go wrong. In all actuality, it just makes us go insane. Now, I’m not saying to not be in control of your life, your actions, or your thoughts, I’m speaking to the people who NEEDS to be in control ALL THE TIME or they can’t function. If this is you, keep on reading to find out 4 ways to stop being a control freak.
Stop, Drop, and Let Go Method (to stop being a control freak)
Once you feel you are about to take control, stop. Take a moment to think about what you are trying to take control of. Ask yourself if you NEED to be in control of this situation right now? Really think about it. Could someone else get the same results (or better)? Or maybe even if no one was in control. Once you stop to think about it, drop all worries, fears, and anxiety about not having control. The last step is to let it go completely and move on with your beautiful life.
Start letting others do things that you usually do
If you are always the one doing all the chores in the house or always planning every family vacation, practice releasing control by letting someone else do it for a change. It’s funny because most of the time, control freaks complain about always having to be the one to get things done but it’s only because they won’t allow for anyone to help them get things done because you always criticize how it’s done. Everyone stays clear because you want no one’s help. Let someone else plan that trip, clean the garage, buy the decor for at least one room in the house. More minds are better than one and more hands are better than two. Hell, you might even like how things turn out better than if you were to have done it.
Remember that certain things cannot be controlled
You cannot go around having anxiety attacks and pissy fits whenever it rains unexpectedly or if you need to go use the bathroom; I mean you could but I’m sure you would be emotionally exhausted. Certain things cannot be controlled no matter how much you try. We can only control ourselves (most can’t even do that but that’s for another blog). We cannot control people around us and certain situations and we must be okay with that because there ain’t nothing you can do about it, sis. Why cry over spilled milk when there’s a carton in the fridge?
Let Go of Ego (allows you to stop being a control freak)
We must remember that it is the ego that needs to always be in control, always in the spotlight. The ego does not trust others and won’t let self trust others either. The ego also loves power. Once you let go of your ego, you will realize that not everything needs to be decided by you. You will also see that you aren’t the only one who knows how to make decisions, and you’ll even see that some decisions others make can be better than your own.
Always being in control is stressful. The constant perfectionism, the heightened nerves, the restless nights, and the never-ending to-do list could drive someone up a wall. Let’s learn to let go of this stressful need so we can be happier and healthier beings. Everything is better in moderation. So yes it amazing that we can get things done, have leadership skills and be organized but it’s not good that we allow ourselves to be stressed, overwhelmed and dysfunctional when we cannot do certain things. I hope this helps my control freak goddesses who just has to take the wheel. Sometimes you need to just be a passenger instead of the driver and just enjoy the ride.
